February Cold

Over six feet of snowfall in the last two weeks, and we are bracing for another twelve inches Saturday evening through Sunday.
Icicles looking deceptively pretty in the first sunshine in about ten days
Sunshine that is just strong enough to melt the ice a bit and make the icicles grow.
Most of the time they look a lot more menacing. How cheerful can you be when this is what greets you when you open the blinds every morning ?
After two months of  the gray skies and snow your brain has turned to mush . . . more so than it already is
And you want to crawl in a hole, hibernate for a few months and wake up when it is all gone.
Six foot snow banks make driving a bit hazardous
Portland harbor viewed from the East End in winter
An oil barge being tugged over to the Merrill terminal to unload
An oil tanker awaits its turn in the channel
Civil war cannon in the snow
Fort Gorges with Peaks Island in the background.
This is what happens to your rear view mirror when snowbanks get in the way and a second driver tries to crowd in where only one car will fit. . . . 45$ for the new one. The plastic housing is cracked but may be saveable.

    1. Yes Gorges, cabin fever has set well in and I have had quite enough of it all by now. Did you note the picture of the fort with your name on it?

    2. Yes I did, Michael; it's about time that I get a little recognition! lol

  4. We are expecting snow, ice and sleet down here starting tonight, but really getting heavy all day Monday. Worse than that is the prediction for near zero temps, which means what falls will stay on the ground and make travel difficult until it gets warm enough to melt. They don't mess with secondary roads here at all.

    1. Hey Harry: Last few days it has been hitting ten below zero at night here and about 15 above during the day. Its started snowing today at around 1 pm and wont end til late Sunday PM. Forecast winds 40 to 50 mph. We are getting your weather plus a hit from the north-west combined. It supposed to get nasty tonight.

  5. Hey Mike, I love the weather you are having. Here we are looking for more snow to travel by snowmachine. Lots of people make a living hauling freight to remote cabins. Icicles are used for drinks and gathering water, unless they are discolored, much like yellow snow. LOL. Hoping the best for ya.

  6. Hey John, I figured you would LOL, I've had just about enough of the cold gray weather. Ten days with no sun just turns my brain to jello.

  7. You really need to take a mid-winter vacation to some place sunny. I love Maine, but man, the winter can give you the blues!

  8. Good to see this post, even if you are only complaining about your lovely winter paradise. I was worried you may have been decapitated by bits of exploding homemade snow blower chute...

    1. Winter paradise? Tom, I am afraid winter and paradise are mutually exclusive terms. As for exploding snow-blower bits, I had so many layers on I would be well equipped to defuse those land mines you used to work on. It's Sunday 8:30 am, its about 15 degrees Celsius below zero, and snow is blowing sideways at about 45 mph right now. No point in even attempting to open the door.

    1. Yes Yael, in photos it looks nice from about 10 thousand miles away. At night it goes down to 25 or 30 degrees below zero centigrade. During the day it goes up to 10 below zero. Winds have been blowing around 75 km per hour for the last 4 days. It snowed from Saturday afternoon to Sunday mid day and we got 30 more cm of snow, on top of the two meters that has already fallen in the last two weeks. Lots of roofs collapsing because of the snow load. Lots of car accidents due to the snow covered roads. The cars are covered in frozen mud, slush, salt and ice. Plastic parts on the car shatter like glass if you bump them. You just don't go outside if you can avoid it. You have to try extra hard to keep a good attitude.

  10. It's Monday night now. Everything is covered with ice. Power lines are coming down all over the county, have been listening to the scanners and this is going to be a bad one for us. I'm ready to switch over to the generator when the grid goes.

    1. Hey Harry, hope you make out OK, and have enough fuel to keep the generator going for the duration. Looks like we will catch the tail end of that weather system on Wednesday.
