Harvest

It has been a prolific year for Pears
We have two trees I planted about eight years ago and both are loaded. Last year they only had about a dozen pears between them and all dissapeared one windy night.
Had to prop up a few of the branches as they were getting so heavy.
Plucked about a hundred of them off the trees as they were starting to drop in the wind and I did not want them to bruise. Haven't the faintest idea what variety they are but we had a couple of the ripened ones and they tasted nice.
Some were a bit lumpy but they should taste OK once they are ripe
We had way too many so I pawned of a few to neighbors and friends

Tomatoes were also the best I have grown in 12 years. No blemishes, bugs, cankers or diseases. The fact I kept them in my wood shed/greenhouse under-roof all year might have something to do with it.
So what do you do when you have an excess of tomatoes? Make cilantro sauce chicken and tomato pizza of course. Haven't yet figured out what we are going to do with all the pears.

  1. Can the pears in a sweet syrup is really nice. Or make perry! That pizza looks amazing, my tomatoes have been so disappointing this year.

    1. I might try to do some poached pears and see how they turn out. Never tried canning but that might be in the works as well. Not sure what Perryl is but I'll need to look in to that.

    2. Perry is like hard cider made from perry pears but it can be made from eating pears as well.

    3. Aha, I shall take the to my friend Jonathan who has a home made apple shredder and a cider pres. These things are certainly juicy and sweet enough.

  2. Hi Mike, wow! You did good on the pears, up here, pears are expensive even at Walmart or Costcos. Your pizza does look tasty. Makes me want to make one right now, lol.

    1. Hey John, yes we lucked out on the pears. I did not do anything different to them this year than last. Basically I ignore them. But this year the conditions were just right. We got lots of flowers and there was not so much rain so they stayed on and we got lots of fruit. The pizza is easy to do. Toppings are what ever left overs I find in the fridge. You can make your own dough or buy the store bought dough ball. Just make sure it is good quality stuff. Not the pre-flattend tasteless flat cardboard. If you make your own dough use beer instead of water. Makes for a much better taste. Make sure you have a pizza stone in your oven. A 3 $ 12"x12"granite tile from the home improvement store will do. Heat the oven to 500 deg F for about a half hour before you pop your pizza in and only cook it for 10 minutes. Works every time.

  3. I could eat fresh tomatoes all day. Slice them up, put some mozzarella cheese , garlic salt on them . A little pepper. Yum! When I lived in Italy my favorite meal was fresh tomatoes, buffala cheese, and fresh bread from the little roadside grocery stores.

    1. That sounds delicious. I shall have to try doing that soon. I have been doing basically something similar but instead of the mozzarella I use avocados. Add a bit of salt pepper, olive oil garlic and a splash of white vinegar, goes down so easy.
