Garden update
Tulips are in full bloom.
This first one is some kind of mutated tulip, the rest need no explanation.
Got my tomatoes and peppers planted yesterday
A soda bottle with a 1/16th inch hole drilled in the cap makes for a nice slow soaker. A bit of Miracle Grow helps them along.
A bit of cheap green spray paint makes assorted colored buckets match.
Almost forgot . . . we have a Cardinal nesting in the Rhododendron bush by the kitchen window.
While cleaning out the garden tool shed this week I found this tidy mouse nest made of grass clippings and hair.
you are about 3 weeks behind me. i like the idea of painting the buckets. i have a lot of cardinals this year. i am also seeing a lot of what i think are tree caterpillars and hope my birds will eat them!
ReplyDeleteHi Jaz, yes we are still dropping in to the mid 30s at night here. Go a mile inland and it is 10 degrees warmer. We are at the inland end of a salt marsh lowland so we have a direct shot to the ocean breeze that keeps us colder than the rest of the immediate area and our gardens is lagging behind others. The buckets make it easy to bring the plants in tho the mud room at night to keep them warm. Thankfully no major bugs yet. While cleaning out my garden tool shed this week, under a bucket I did find a massive nest of caterpillar cocoons. They went in to the burn barrel.

ReplyDeleteIs that what they are called Gorges? I never new. They just sort of appeared there one day. We only planted the Tulips and the Lilies that will come up later in the summer.

ReplyDeleteHi John, Tulips are great. Just plant the bulbs and they keep coming up every spring. It always adds some bright color to the house. Same with the Lilies later in the season.
DeleteGood to see a bit of colour in your garden! I bet that warms your heart! Your tomatoes are bigger than mine I think! Although I have a bout 90 of them at the moment!
ReplyDeleteHey Kev, I am still having to bring them in to the mud room at night as the temps are dropping quite low. 90 would definitely not fit in the mud room. LOL. Four plants is enough for us. A few years back when I had a full blown veggie garden I had 48 tomato plants and wound up tossing wheelbarrows full of tomatoes away as they got diseases and spoiled before they ripened. So I gave up on it and went to the buckets.

Hi Deb, yes it is a freak mutation of some kind. I suspect as the bulbs have been in the ground ten years the genetics are getting a bit tired and the switch that tell it when to stop making petals got deleted.
